Mill Valley Residence

Project Description: The Mill Valley Residence features a renovation of an existing midcentury hillside structure and includes the addition of a new kitchen addition, accessory dwelling unit, and pool. The existing 2,770 square foot house is on a 0.5 acre lot with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and features view of San Francisco. Upon geotechnical investigation, it was discovered the steep hillside required additional slope stabilization.

The existing pitched roof structure contains the main living spaces of the house, blending areas of dramatic openness with spaces for respite and privacy. A new kitchen addition is extended off the main level overlooking the new pool and green roof of the pool house. The central kitchen volume also features a cantilevered carport. The wood clad pool house overlooks the pool and cantilevers over the hillside, opening up the the landscape. Sustainability features were considered in the new and old volumes. The volumes together create shared couryard area, created the pool and exterior space as the center of activity.
