Mendocino House

Location: Ukiah, CA

Architects: Jensen Architects

Project Description: The Mendocino House consists of a new Net Zero ready single-story residence in the rural outskirts of Mendocino County. Located in High Fire Severity Zone, the project is resilient response to the extremities of the site. Passive and active design solutions allow for energy efficient performance in both the hot summers and freezing winters.

The Spine of the project consists of two large concrete walls, acting as both a thermal mass and utility chase. The Spine emerges out of the hillside and extends over 150 feet into the landscape. The juxtaposition of the minimalist concrete slabs creates a monumental impact on the immediate site yet is dwarfed by the vast undeveloped space of the over the ridge beyond. Opposite of the Spine is a large, seemingly weightless roof over a glass box and a bedroom wing, connected by a covered breezeway that is centered upon two oak trees directly west of the residence. The covered breezeway not only links the bedroom wing with the living and dining area with an indoor /outdoor space, but it also takes advantage of the prevailing winds, allowing for crossventilation.
